Since 2007, SCS has been participating in the COASST program. COASST is a volunteer-based, citizen-science program that involves coastal communities in monitoring marine resources and ecosystem health. COASST volunteers routinely monitor a local shoreline they’ve “adopted” for dead and beached birds. All volunteers have completed an 8-hour training course to identify and report the birds.
COASST data, which is collected from Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, serve as a critical baseline to assess any future impacts, whether from human or natural causes, to the marine ecosystem.
SCS staff and volunteers monitor three beaches near Sitka: Totem Park, and Kamenoi and Shelikof Beaches on Kruzof Island.
Contact the SALMoN Coordinator Scott Harris (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you would like to join us on a dead-bird survey!
